Food is one of the areas where we’ve found a lot of flexibility.

What Surprised Us

At the same time, certain costs—like imported groceries or convenience items—can add up more quickly than we thought.

Overall, it’s less about everything being “cheap” and more about how we choose to spend.

What Helps Keep Our Costs Lower

A few things have made a big difference for us:

  • choosing walkable locations

  • staying in one place longer

  • cooking most meals at home

  • keeping our routines simple

This lifestyle naturally reduces some expenses, even without trying too hard.

What We Actually Use

We try to keep things simple when it comes to what we bring and use day to day. A few items have made this lifestyle easier for us, especially while traveling as a family.

Here are a few things we use consistently (some of them are linked below)

We tend to stick with items that are practical, easy to replace, and work across different places.

Is It Cheaper Than Living in the U.S.?

In many ways, yes—but not across the board.

Some things cost less, while others cost about the same or more depending on what you’re looking for.

For us, the biggest difference isn’t just cost—it’s how we’re able to structure our time and daily life.

Final Thoughts

Cost is only one part of the decision to live this way.

For us, it’s about having more flexibility, more time together, and the ability to shape our days differently.

This is what it looks like right now for our family—and it will likely continue to change as we go.
